THE LATEST...

The latest anthology in which I have a story is Murder at the Racetrack, edited by Otto Penzler. It contains a long short story of mine, "Zuppa Inglese." (Nearly a novella, to be honest.) It's the story of a man who finds his life turned upside when his widowed brother dies—and he becomes the guardian of his young nephew and the racehorse the boy loves. He's gradually convinced that the deaths of the boy's parents weren't properly investigated, and the answers he seeks lead back to Zuppa Ingelese.

Members of my family owned racehorses at one time, and Debbie Arrington, a sports writer who covers horse racing, is always one of first people I turn to for help with the details of Irene's reporting life, so writing this story brought back memories and put me in touch with friends and loved ones. The horse's name is an Italian dessert—the story explains how he came by it.

You'll also find stories by Lawrence Block, Ken Bruen, Joyce Carol Oates, H.R.F. Keating, Julie Smith and other leading writers. Books can be ordered now through Barnes & Noble.
